Continually monitoring yourself throughout your workout routine is crucial for avoiding injury and other negative health consequences. It is far too easy to overextend oneself in an attempt to reach your fitness goals. Below are the signs of overdoing it you must be aware of to protect yourself.

1. Breathing difficulties

Pay attention to your breathing habits. An efficient workout routine increases your heart rate enough to result in deep, strong breaths. When you are overdoing it, in comparison, your breathing becomes labored. Signs of labored breathing include gasping for air, uncontrollable coughing, shortness of breath, or wheezing.

Breathing difficulties can easily turn into dizziness, extremity numbness, lightheadedness, inability to walk or use equipment, or heart irregularities. You may notice your heart skipping beats, beating heavily within your chest, or murmurs. Fend off breathing concerns by remembering to exercise only to the point of being able to carry on a conversation. If you cannot talk, you are overdoing it.

2. Change in mental outlook

In addition to noticing physical ailments, pay attention to your mental state. You can suddenly develop a dislike for exercise. Emotions like depression, disinterest, boredom, loss of passion, and mood changes can signal you are overdoing it. Mood changes include frustration, stress or anxiety, impatience, and confusion. Your body releases extra stress hormones when being overstressed by exercise. When left unchecked, these  stress hormones can lead to a number of negative health ailments like stroke, heart attack, and hindered immune system functioning.

As your mental state changes from the stress of overdoing it, you can easily notice fatigue and lack of energy. When exacerbated, this can lead to sleeping disorders that make getting a sound night’s sleep next to impossible. Insomnia sets in when this happens. You may also notice a loss of focus and concentration.

3. Changes in vision

Vision irregularities are another sign of overdoing it. Vision suddenly becomes impaired, blurry, or doubled. Your eyes can become dry, irritated and bloodshot. You may notice the digital readings on your elliptical or treadmill as being difficult to see clearly. If you experience dry eyes, consider lightly spritzing them with water while taking a short break.

4. Joint and muscle irregularities

When you start feeling aches and pains, this is your body’s way of saying “STOP!” Immediately stop what you are doing whenever you experience any type of headache, sharp or sudden pains, muscle cramps, or joint swelling. Over-stressing your musculoskeletal system can result in a delayed recovery time. A longer recuperation time, also known as delayed recovery time, hinders workout efficiency. Consider gently massaging the affected area to improve circulation and comfort.

5. Lack of performance

When you workout at an optimum level, you will notice results over time. When you are overdoing it, however, you more than likely will not see any performance advances. It seems that your workouts are in vain and at a continual plateau. You may start gaining weight and losing muscle strength as a result of overdoing your workout routine.

Understanding the warning signs of overdoing it are crucial for developing a lifetime of healthy exercise habits. They are the foundation for your overall well-being.
