People have heard the phrase “I lost my appetite” or “I have such an appetite” sometime in their lives. But are they aware of what an appetite really is?

How does your appetite control your weight? Learn more about what your appetite is, if it’s healthy, and how to control it.

Appetite

Definition of appetite

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines appetite as any of the instinctive desires necessary to keep up organic life or an inherent craving.

People tend to get appetite confused with hunger. Hunger is the need for food. Humans need food to survive and if we aren’t fed, our hunger kicks in and reminds us to eat.

Appetite, on the other hand, is the desire to eat. You don’t need to have an appetite to survive (although that would make life pretty boring.) Depending on what situation you are in will depend on how active your appetite is.

If you go out to eat at a restaurant and the waiter places fresh, warm bread on the table in front of you, chances are you going to grab a piece. Is that out of hunger? Most likely no. It is just your appetite kicking in, wanting to taste that bread.

This is where appetite control plays a role in weight loss and reaching your fitness goals.

Read along to figure out how to control your appetite to stick to your goals!

If people gave in to their appetite cravings all of the time, the entire world would be obese. Although we do have an obesity problem going on in this country, there are still some people left can take control of their appetite when necessary.

Appetite control is one of the hardest things to grasp.

In a world full of delicious, unhealthy food, our minds can sometimes take over and give in to those desires.

Keeping your appetite on an even keel will help avoid overindulging on certain foods, keeping your weight at a healthy level. Follow these tips to keeping your appetite at bay.

Eat protein at breakfast!

Protein gets a good reputation when it comes to fitness and weight loss, and for good reason. This power packed macronutrient does wonders for our appetite and our hunger levels.

It helps especially when consumed at breakfast. During this time, we must feed our bodies the proper amount and the right kind of foods to keep our appetite and our hunger levels at a normal level for the rest of the day.

Eating a breakfast high in protein will keep your appetite from spikining. Eat at least 30 grams of protein for breakfast each day. Good choices include egg whites, turkey bacon, or low fat yogurt.

Consume healthy fats

In moderation, fats can help you curb your appetite as well as lose body fat. Unsaturated fats such as olive oil, nuts, and avocados contain oleic acid which has proven to reduce your appetite.

Having a diet rich in healthy fats will help you have appetite control.

Eat potatoes!

Potatoes sometimes get a bad reputation because of the amount of carbohydrates they contain but these carbs are actually good for you.

Potatoes contain a certain starch that helps to resist digestive enzymes. Consuming a baked potato at lunch or dinner will make this enzyme work its magic.

Exercise!

Of course when it comes to any kind of diet control, exercise and fitness plays a major role. Doing 60 minutes of high intensity exercise has shown to cut your appetite down for up to 2 hours of exercising.

Continue doing this on a daily basis and you will resist many, many urges.
